Over 270 compete in schools’ football, netball super leagues

A total of 160 students representing eight schools in the Sultanate will take part in the Brunei Darussalam Schools Football Super League (BDSFSL) 2024, while 112 female students from eight schools will compete in the Brunei Darussalam Schools Netball Super League (BDSNSL) 2024.

The schools consist teams who emerged champions in their groups during the qualifying round in 2023.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) through the Physical and Recreation Division, Co-Curriculum Education Department with the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), and the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FABD) as well as the Brunei Darussalam National Netball Association held separate opening ceremonies yesterday.

The BDSFSL 2024, which will be held every Monday and Wednesday, kicked off on February 26 and is set to conclude on June 5 in two locations – the FABD Field and Tutong Sports Complex.

The opening match saw Berakas Secondary School run out 3-0 winners against Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School through goals from Md Izzul Dzakirin bin Md Zool Helmi, Awangku Faris Fadillah bin Pengiran Saiful Bahri and Mohd Hifzhan bin Rusydi.

Director of Co-curriculum Education Department Julaihi bin Mohamad/ Mohamat was the guest of honour.

Meanwhile, the BDSNSL 2024 started yesterday and will conclude on May 18. Matches will be played every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at two locations – the multipurpose hall of Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School and multipurpose hall of Awang Semaun Secondary School.

The students competing in BDSFSL and BDSNSL are from government and private secondary schools, colleges and sixth form centres under the MoE and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Those with potential and talent in football and netball will be selected to represent the Brunei Darussalam Sports School Council (MS SSBD) football team and the Brunei Darussalam Sports School Council (MS SSBD) netball team.

The championship also aims to strengthen cooperation between educational institutions and related agencies through the two sports. – Fadhil Yunus & Rokiah Mahmud
