Over 1,300kg of waste removed from Brunei River

A total of 95 plastic bags, weighing over 1,356.50 kilogrammes, were collected when over 130 volunteers including village heads, students, officials from the Brunei-Muara District Office, Health Promotion Centre and Fire and Rescue Department joined hands to clean the Brunei River recently.

The places cleaned were various zones in Kampong Ayer, including Kampong Siamas, Kampong Setia, Kampong Saba Darat, Kampong Sungai Kebun and Kampong Bakut Berumput.

The event, organised by Green Brunei was part of the European Union-ASEAN Green Diplomacy Week. Ambassador of the European Union to ASEAN Sujiro Seam highlighted the importance of clean river to the environment and economy.

Ten events are taking place in ASEAN member countries as part of the EU-ASEAN Green Diplomacy Weeks 2023.

The events encourage youth and local communities to actively engage in green transition activities.

The volunteers also engaged in active discussions to learn about the EU initiatives on environment. The volunteers expressed having better awareness and understanding of the scale of the waste management problem in Kampong Ayer.
