Over 100kg underwater debris removed

Over 100 kilogrammes (kg) of abandoned fishing nets were removed from Brunei’s coastlines by the Fisheries Department and Reef Check Brunei.

The operation took place in Pelong Rocks, a designated marine conservation area where the accumulation of discarded fishing gear was identified as a pressing concern.

A team of 10 skilled divers combed through the underwater terrain, extracting nets that had become ensnared in coral reefs and other marine structures.

Underwater debris poses a significant threat to marine biodiversity, often entangling and endangering marine animals such as turtles, dolphins, and various fish species, according to Reef Check Brunei.

The initiative, led by the Fisheries Department and supported by Reef Check Brunei, underscores the importance of proactive conservation efforts in safeguarding marine habitats.

“The removal of over 100kg of fishing nets is a testament to the dedication and skill of our team,” said a Fisheries Department spokesperson. “These efforts not only mitigate the immediate hazards posed to marine life but also contribute to the broader goal of promoting sustainable practices within our marine ecosystems.”

Reef Check Brunei, renowned for its commitment to marine conservation and community engagement, played a pivotal role in coordinating the cleanup operation.

“Their expertise in assessing and monitoring reef health proved instrumental in identifying critical areas where the removal of debris would have the most significant impact.

“We are pleased to have partnered with the Fisheries Department on this initiative. By working together, we can amplify our efforts to protect Brunei’s marine biodiversity and ensure these precious ecosystems thrive for future generations,” said Reef Check Brunei Chairman.

The collaborative cleanup not only addresses the immediate environmental threats but also raises awareness about the importance of responsible waste management among local communities and stakeholders.

By promoting sustainable fishing practices and advocating for the proper disposal of fishing gear, the initiative aims to prevent future accumulation of marine debris.

As concerns over marine pollution continue to grow globally, initiatives like these serve as inspiring examples of proactive conservation action. Through partnerships and community engagement, organisations such as the Fisheries Department and Reef Check Brunei demonstrate the tangible impact of collective efforts in preserving the oceans.

Stakeholders remain committed to ongoing monitoring and conservation efforts, ensuring that Brunei’s marine environments remain vibrant and resilient in the face of environmental challenges.
