Some 1,071 kilogrammes (kg) of garbage, including 426kg of plastic bottles, were collected during a coastal cleanup organised by the Ministry of Development through the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) yesterday.
The event at Meragang Beach also saw the launch of the Marine Debris Cleanup Handbook by JASTRe Director Martinah binti Haji Tamit.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by the launch of the book.
The event continued with a safety briefing and light exercise before proceeding with the clean-ups.
The campaign focussing on marine debris was also held simultaneously at Serasa Beach, Muara Beach, Seri Kenangan Beach in Tutong District, and Kuala Belait Beach in Belait District, participated by officers and staff of the department.
