Outstanding religious school students feted

Efforts to enhance religious school students’ performances in public examinations came to fruition when Arabic and religious schools recorded 94.65 per cent of students obtaining grades ‘A’ to ’C’ in Primary School Assessment (PSR) last year, with 16.3 per cent of students getting five ‘A’s.

Director of Islamic Studies Department at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Haji Shamsol bin Haji Omar said this at an appreciation ceremony at Bridex Hall, Jerudong, yesterday for 124 students who excelled in public examinations last year, as well as 49 teachers for their contributions.

Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman presented certificates of appreciation to the recipients.

In the Religious Primary Schools exam Education Certificate exam, students who obtained Grade 1 rose 11.04 per cent to 63.84 per cent while those who passed also increased 16.96 per cent to 79.80 per cent. Haji Shamsol said that efforts continue to be implemented, prioritising teachers’ competency, especially in teaching and learning skills, to improve the teaching quality and subsequently, students achievements.

“Among the initiatives that have been implemented are the Tahsin Qiraatil Quran programme, focusing on improving teachers’ skills and competence in reading and teaching Al-Quran, and the Strengthening the At-Tatweer programme which is a platform for teachers’ professional development through scheduled workshops, sharing sessions on effective and best practices adapted to current educational developments,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hassanal Bolkiah Boys Arabic Secondary School and Pelambayan Religious School received the Excellent School Award.

The event was held as a token of gratitude to Allah the Almighty and as an incentive for outstanding students, as well as a motivation for other students to increase their efforts to excel academically. – Azlan Othman
