Optimism for ASEAN to be centre of growth

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah attended the 22nd Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community Council in Jakarta, Indonesia recently.

According to the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE), the meeting chaired by Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto comes with the theme ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth’. Indonesia, as the ASEAN Chair this year remains optimistic that ASEAN will continue to be a centre of growth by safeguarding food and energy security, embracing the development of an electric vehicle ecosystem, and continuously supporting financial stability.

In this regard, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Council ministers discussed, among others, the impact of the evolving regional economic landscape to ASEAN economic integration efforts, Timor-Leste’s participation in ASEAN economic meetings, welcomed the 16 Priority Economic Deliverables of Indonesia and noted the current progress on the development of the ASEAN Community’s Post-2025 Vision.

A Special Retreat Session was also convened to exchange views on ASEAN’s sustainability initiatives and concerns relating to energy transition and the development of a regional electric vehicle ecosystem. During the retreat session, the AEC Council ministers welcomed the implementation of the initial phase of the Circular Economy Implementation Plan as well as the exploration of the ASEAN Blue Economy as the new engine of growth for the region, the release of Version 2 of the ASEAN Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, and the development of the ASEAN Strategy on Carbon Neutrality.

The 22nd AEC Council Meeting was preceded by a Preparatory-Senior Economic Officials Meeting (Prep-SEOM) for the 22nd AEC Council on Saturday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Permanent Secretary (Economy, Trade and Industry) at the MoFE Dr Hajah May Fa’ezah binti Haji Ahmad Ariffin headed Brunei Darussalam’s delegation to the meeting.
