‘Operasi Kelinga’ uncovers six labour violations

Six violations were unearthed in two separate operations conducted by the Law Enforcement Division under the Labour Department.

The first Operasi Kelinga targeted a food processing company in Kampong Gana, Mukim Liang, in the Belait District.

During the inspection, the employer was found guilty of four offences under the Employment Order 2009.

The violations included the employer’s failure to provide a written service contract, employees being made to work on rest days, the employer neglecting to grant leave on gazetted public holidays, and the employer failing to provide annual leave as mandated by the law.

In another inspection in Kampong Jerudong on July 26, two additional offences under the Employment Order 2009 were discovered. An employer had breached the licence conditions by hiring two foreign workers as labourers to work as delivery men, which is against the rules set by the Employment Order 2009 guidelines.

The Labour Department reminded employers to prioritise their employees’ welfare and comply with the Employment Order 2009’s requirements.

This includes preparing proper employment contracts and ensuring the timely payment of wages. Employers are also advised against misusing the Foreign Worker Licence and violating any provisions stated in the Employment Order 2009.

The operations emphasise the importance of adhering to the labour laws to protect the rights and well-being of workers and maintain fair and lawful employment practices.
