‘Operasi Bersih’ targets litterbugs

Twenty individuals and three local companies were each slapped with compound fines between September to October in violation of Section 12, Chapter 30 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021.

The violations were discovered during Operasi Bersih. The total amount of compound fine issued stands at BND4,100. The operations were carried out by personnel of the Law Enforcement Unit under Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department.

Offenders are advised to settle their fines at the Finance Division on the third floor of the BSB Municipal Department within seven days.

Under the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021, the rate of compound fine for an individual is not more than BND1,000 while for a corporate body it is not more than BND2,000.

Failure to settle the compound fine will result in the case being brought to court.

An individual found guilty will face a BND1,000 and BND3,000 fine for the first offence, between BND3,000 and BND9,000, imprisonment of no more than six months, or both, for subsequent offences.

Meanwhile, any company found guilty will face a fine between BND2,000 and BND10,000 for the first offence, and between BND10,000 and BND30,000, imprisonment of no more than 12 months, or both, for subsequent offences.
