On the right direction

As the graduation season sweeps across Brunei Darussalam, the nation’s young scholars are stepping into a future brimming with both promise and uncertainty.

In a rapidly changing world and an increasingly competitive job market, these graduates are determined to forge their own paths, carving out opportunities in innovative and emerging fields.

While challenges persist, this new generation is embracing the chance to pursue specialised careers that align with Brunei’s vision for a more diverse, knowledge-driven economy.

Recently, the Ministry of Education (MoE) held a ceremony to honour the latest recipients of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Government Overseas Scholarships, which support students pursuing undergraduate degrees at renowned international universities.

The event also celebrated recipients of the Special Scholarships, awarded to students for secondary and pre-university education at Brunei’s top international schools, such as Jerudong International School (JIS) and International School Brunei (ISB). The Bulletin spoke with some of the recipients as they reflected on their educational journeys and shared their desire to give back to the country through the pursuit of specialised fields.

SCHOLARS WITH A VISION OF THE FUTURE

Najwa Batrisha binti Zul Fadliy, who formerly studied at Tutong Sixth Form Centre, is one of these bright minds. She is heading to the University of Glasgow to pursue a degree in Genetics, an area she feels holds great potential for Brunei.

“Genetics, especially gene technology, is growing rapidly worldwide. My late father, a Royal Brunei pilot, was my source of inspiration,” Najwa shared in an interview.

“Studying abroad is one of those experiences you never want to trade for anything. I’m excited to learn, gain new experiences, and come home to contribute to the Brunei Vision 2035.”

Najwa’s choice of study aligns perfectly with global trends, as the field of genetics is increasingly recognised as critical in healthcare and innovation.

Her passion also highlighted the growing interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields among Bruneian students, expected to play a key role in the nation’s future development.

Similarly, Awangku Salman Al Farisi bin Pengiran Haji Sofian, formerly from Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College, is pursuing a degree in Medical Imaging at Queensland University in Australia. His ambition to work in the healthcare field came from hands-on experience during his attachment at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital’s Physiotherapy and Diagnostic Imaging Department.

“Studying overseas will shape me academically and personally, helping me become more confident and disciplined,” Awangku Salman explained.

“I’ve always been keen to work in Allied Health, and this scholarship offers me the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge I need to succeed.” For Awangku Salman, this educational journey is not just about academic achievement, but about returning to Brunei as a healthcare professional capable of meeting the country’s growing demand for medical expertise.

PRE-UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS EMBARKING ON NEW ADVENTURES

For pre-university students like Adrian Chong Rui Sern and Nur Aliya Batrisya binti Haji Abdul Latif, the scholarships represent a chance to receive world-class education at prestigious international schools.

Both students are set to begin their studies at JIS, where they will experience a learning environment that goes beyond academics, focusing on holistic development.

Adrian, who worked hard to ace his O-Level exams and also successful during the interview for the scholarship, expressed his excitement: “This scholarship provides me the motivation to continue striving to achieve my dreams.

“It’s an opportunity to learn not just academically but to grow as a person. I’m looking forward to participating in activities that will help me build life skills, and eventually, I hope to study medicine and become a doctor.”

Adrian’s determination to balance academic excellence with personal development echoes the values promoted by JIS, where students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

For him, the scholarship is not just a financial support system but a recognition of his potential to contribute to Brunei’s future healthcare sector.

Nur Aliya shares a similar sense of responsibility and ambition.

“It’s a huge achievement for me, and I’m very grateful to the Brunei government for this opportunity. It gives me confidence in myself and motivates me to work even harder,” she said.

Nur Aliya plans to develop her leadership skills during her time at JIS, hoping to become a well-rounded student prepared to take on challenges in both her academic and personal life.

“This scholarship takes away a lot of worries about school fees and allows me to focus fully on my learning,” she added.

“I want to use this opportunity to make a positive difference for Brunei in the future-maybe by becoming a teacher or even working in the government.”

As graduation season continues, Brunei’s young minds are stepping into a world of opportunities, equipped with the skills, drive, and support to succeed. Whether they are aspiring doctors, geneticists, or future leaders, these scholars exemplify the promise of a new era for the Sultanate. – Azlan Othman
