Brunei Darussalam is currently experiencing the northeast monsoon, which is expected to last until the end of March 2025, said Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) in a statement yesterday.
During the first half of this monsoon season, the country typically faces unstable weather with heavy showers or thundershowers, particularly at night and early morning. In contrast, the second half of the monsoon, in February and March, is expected to bring more stable atmospheric conditions and reduced rainfall.
Weather is forecasted to remain active until January 3, with occasional heavy and thundery showers affecting coastal and sea areas in the morning and night, and inland areas in the afternoon.
The winds could reach speeds of up to 45 kilometres per hour during these showers.
Over Brunei waters, the sea state is expected to be slight to moderate, ranging from 0.5 to 1.8 metres.
The public is advised to take necessary precautions during this period of active weather. Flash floods are likely, especially in low-lying areas, flood-prone regions, and along riverbanks during heavy rain or high tide. There is also a risk of landslides, fallen trees, and flying roofs during intense showers and gusty conditions.
Sea conditions are hazardous for small boats, recreational activities and sports.
Members of the public, road users and fishermen are urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, advisories and warnings from the BDMD and to take appropriate actions for safety.
