No ‘copy’ here! Illit charts their own path with ‘I’ll Like You’

SEOUL (ANN/THE KOREA HERALD) – K-pop girl group Illit has unveiled their highly anticipated second EP, “I’ll Like You”, amidst swirling allegations of copying NewJeans’ concept.

Rather than engaging in disputes, the group has chosen to stay above the fray, focusing on their own creative vision and growth.

“We’ve worked hard to show our fans our best, no matter the situation,” member Yunah shared during a lively showcase in Seoul on Monday. She reflected on the journey so far, expressing gratitude to everyone who has been part of Illit’s rise in the K-pop scene. “We think of all those who’ve supported and cheered us on as we’ve grown.”

Yunah also made it clear that Illit is determined to carve out a unique identity within the industry, regardless of the ongoing controversy. “We’re committed to showcasing our own style and preserving the love our fans have for Illit,” she added confidently.

The group has faced significant turbulence since accusations first surfaced from former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin, who in April accused Illit of imitating NewJeans’ concept for their debut EP, “Super Real Me”. In response, Illit’s agency, Belift Lab, staunchly refuted these claims, branding them as baseless.

During the event, the members also spoke about the pressures they encountered while creating a follow-up to their unexpected smash hit, “Magnetic,” from their debut EP.

“Of course, there was some pressure while working on our second mini album,” admitted member Wonhee. “But above all, our goal is for our fans to feel joy when they listen to our music.”

The new EP features five tracks, including the lead single “Cherish (My Love),” the title track “I’ll Like You,” as well as “IYKYK (If You Know You Know),” “Pimple,” and “Tick-Tack.”

The group pointed out that “Cherish (My Love)” embodies their bold and authentic charm, focusing on embracing their own emotions over seeking outside approval.

“We were nervous at first since it’s a vibe we’ve never tried before, but the more we practised, the more it felt like ours,” Yunah said.

“We poured a lot into it, recording the track seven times. It’s a piece that allowed us to grow together as a group.”

Illit also expressed their appreciation for the mentorship of Hybe Chairman Bang Si-hyuk, who served as a producer on the EP.

“Mr Bang offered us detailed guidance on how to express ourselves in the choreography and deliver our emotions through our expressions,” Wonhee shared.

“His insights really helped us bring more energy and depth to the performance.”

With “I’ll Like You”, Illit is determined to prove that they are more than the rumours, using this release as an opportunity to redefine their path in the vibrant and competitive world of K-pop.
