New Year’s Eve flash floods strike Brunei-Muara

Several areas in the Brunei-Muara District experienced flash flooding after heavy rains on New Year’s Eve on Sunday night.

A yellow warning was also issued by the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department.

Heavy rains began around 9pm on Sunday. In Kampong Tungku, cars were stuck in flood waters and the Fire and Rescue Department was called in to assist.

Kampong Tungku resident Jeffry Wong said he was unable to return home because the road was cut off due to flood at around 11pm.

He said that the current appeared quite fast, and he did not dare attempt a crossing until 1am, when the waters subsided.

“This was the first time I witnessed such a rapid current. It’s not only the road, but the flood waters also affected some shops and homes in the area,” he said. – James Kon
