Wasan Milling Company Sdn Bhd, a new commercial entity wholly owned by Darussalam Assets Sdn Bhd, took over the operations of the government rice milling facility at Wasan Agricultural Development Area yesterday.
Rice milling services previously under the purview of the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) will be transferred to Wasan Milling Company in phases, according to a press release.
The corporatisation initiative was driven by MPRT and facilitated by Darussalam Assets. It was aimed at elevating Brunei’s rice production capabilities to complement the Sultanate’s growing needs.
Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy) and Chief Executive Officer of Darussalam Assets Dato Seri Paduka Haji Khairuddin bin Haji Abdul Hamid said the objective for the new company’s establishment is to increase rice production in Brunei and ensure the supply of high quality local rice in the local market.
Wasan Milling Company will create employment opportunities for Bruneians in the agribusiness industry and provide specialisation in operating rice milling machinery and equipment in line with international best practices
The corporatisation is aligned with Brunei Vision 2035’s aspirations while supporting the Sultanate’s food security agenda. The company in collaboration with MPRT will also be upgrading the rice milling facility with latest technology to increase capacity and productivity as well as produce high quality local rice.
