Needy in Brunei, Bangladesh to get meals for Ramadhan

The Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) will distribute iftar to the needy in the Sultanate and Bangladesh for this year’s upcoming Ramadhan, marking its 10th consecutive year since its establishment in 2015.

The iftar distribution to 800 needy people in Brunei will begin on the second day of Ramadhan and will continue for 15 days, it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the distribution which has been extended to Bangladesh since 2018, includes refugees at Unchiprang Refugee Camp in Bangladesh.

Each iftar distribution in Bangladesh will cost BND1.50.

“There will be three distribution centres for the iftar food; at MKM office for Brunei-Muara, Temburong and Tutong districts and in Kuala Belait. The distribution centre at MKM office at Anggerek Desa will be managed by MKM’s Youth Wing, led by its president Abang Haji Masrur bin Abang Haji Zainuddin,” said MKM President Mohd Yusof bin Halim during MKM’s executive meeting recently.

The centre will distribute around 500 iftar food packets per day.

“The distribution centre in Temburong District will be managed by Dr Hajah Kamariah binti Abu Salim where iftar food will be distributed to around 150 needy people,” he said. “Meanwhile, Hajah Zaiton binti Salim will manage the Kuala Belait distribution centre. Around 150 needy people will receive meals. The cost of each iftar food for Brunei is around BND5, which include rice, a protein dish, a vegetable dish and water,” he added.

“This is a major project we conduct annually which involves all executive committee members, council members and volunteers. We are fortunate to be able to not only run this project continuously for Brunei for 10 years since 2015, but to be able to extend it to Bangladesh since 2018. All this is made possible through public donations,” said Mohd Yusof. – Fadley Faisal
