CNA – Do your in-laws have a knack for pushing your buttons? Do they respect your privacy, or do they occasionally overstep your parenting boundaries? If you’re nodding in agreement, you’re certainly not alone in Singapore. 

Many women find themselves navigating the intricate dynamics of in-law relationships, especially when family ties become intertwined, whether through shared living spaces or their involvement in childcare. 

It’s no surprise that tensions can arise; conflicting parenting philosophies and differing values can create friction in what should be supportive connections. 

But fear not—there are effective strategies to help you manage these relationships while staying true to your own values and fostering a harmonious family environment.

  1. Define Your Boundaries

Establishing your boundaries is a crucial first step, albeit one that may require reflection. Take the time to identify your core values—what matters most to you? These might include language use, instilling positive attitudes in your children, or prioritising a healthy lifestyle. 

Once you’ve clarified your non-negotiables, have an open conversation with your spouse to ensure you’re on the same page.

Following this, you can engage your in-laws in a respectful dialogue. For instance, if they tend to use negative language around your children, you might suggest alternatives, like, “Instead of saying, ‘That’s so stupid!’, perhaps we could say, ‘Let’s find a better way’.” 

It’s also helpful to invite them to share their own boundaries, creating a mutual understanding.

Dan Ng, a registered counsellor with the Singapore Association for Counselling, notes that while setting boundaries early is ideal, cultural and personal differences can complicate matters. Everyone’s boundaries vary—some in-laws may expect daily visits, while others prefer less frequent contact.

  1. Communicate Clearly and Respectfully

Communication with in-laws requires a delicate touch. When expressing your needs, it’s important to be both clear and respectful. 

For instance, if your mother-in-law insists on attending a distant relative’s wedding, instead of saying, “Why must you force us to go?”, you could respond, “Family is important to me, but I already have plans. Please understand we can’t attend.”

If unannounced visits are an issue, try saying, “I appreciate your desire to spend time with us, but I’d prefer advance notice so I can prepare.” 

Remember, actions often speak louder than words. Show empathy and respect by considering their feelings as well. This might involve changing your own habits, such as limiting weekend visits to ensure quality family time.

  1. Enlist Your Partner’s Support

For boundary-setting to be effective, both you and your spouse must be aligned. Discuss your feelings about your in-laws and ensure you present a united front. Interestingly, a 2022 study from the Journal of Evolutionary Psychological Science found that both men and women often report more conflicts with their mothers-in-law than their own parents.

To navigate these tricky waters, it may help for your husband to initiate discussions about concerns involving his family. He can lead the way in establishing new ground rules, making it easier for you to reinforce them.

  1. Reinforce Boundaries and Seek Compromise

Establishing boundaries takes time and consistency. Don’t feel guilty about asserting your needs; doing so is vital for maintaining a healthy family dynamic. If your mother-in-law struggles to adapt, remember that change takes patience. 

Reinforce your boundaries consistently, and if she forgets, gently remind her that these new rules are non-negotiable.

Ng advises looking at the situation from a different perspective and managing your expectations. 

Explore compromises that allow both parties to feel heard. For example, if disagreements arise in front of your children, take the time to explain your reasoning. This helps instil respect for boundaries and encourages your kids to support your decisions.

  1. Keep the Bigger Picture in Mind

Patience is key when dealing with family dynamics, especially with older relatives. Remember, not every disagreement is worth pursuing. When faced with minor conflicts, consider whether they’ll matter in a few years—if not, it might be best to let it go.

Setting healthy boundaries isn’t about shutting out your in-laws; it’s about creating a safe space for your family. 

While navigating these relationships can be challenging, particularly in an Asian context where family ties are strong, the goal is to foster an environment where everyone’s needs are met.
