Unveiling the charm of nature’s masterpieces.
In the realm of gardening, where we embrace greenery to breathe life into our homes, one houseplant phenomenon still persists and often breaks the monotony of foliage with varying colours – variegated houseplants.
A sought after gem in the plant world, variegated houseplants are botanical wonders, captivating plant enthusiasts and novices alike for the elegance and sophistication they bring to any space.
Today’s excursion aims to explore the allure of variegation, uncover the secret behind their appeal, and discover the best practices for maintaining their vibrant beauty.
For the uninitiated, variegation in essence refers to the appearance of different colour zones or segments on leaves, stems, fruits or flowers.
There are various types of variegation, and one that is highly valued is chimeral variegation, which occur due to two different chromosomal make-ups in a single plant.
It’s a genetic mutation that affects chlorophyll – the pigment that gives plants their green hues – and as such, variegated house plants will have leaf segments that are not able to produce chlorophyll.
This absence results in striking patterns of varying colours, from mesmerising whites and creams to delicate pinks and yellows.
Plant enthusiast Abdul Muqsith Haji Yahya, a foliage lover, sees variegation as mother nature’s own masterpiece, believing that his own pursuit for beautiful and distinct variegation patterns is no different than the flower lover’s chase for new blooms.
“There were a lot of factors that contribute towards my interest in cultivating variegated plants; social media hype and peer pressure for example.
“But after taking care of them myself, I’m much more appreciative of the combination of colours and the patterns that they display.
“Every new leaf is unique, like art drawn by nature and I’m always left excited to see the next leaf – the next piece of art – unfold.”
Based on the 30-year-old’s experience with growing the monstera albo, a variegated and widely coveted subspecies of the well-known and very popular mostera deliciosa, Muqsith noted how different species of variegated plants may display different tolerances. “Variegated plants have less green on their leaves, therefore less chlorophyll (which would lead to less photosynthesis or energy required by the plant), and as such, giving them the right amount of sunlight is crucial,” he said.
“They are more vulnerable, which is reflected by how easily their variegated segments brown. In fact, it is a challenge for a lot of plant enthusiast to ensure that all their leaves remain variegated.”
He added that watering frequency, humidity and sunlight play a huge role in order to keep variegated plants healthy.
However, according to Muqsith, who also sells plants online, the variegation of plant starts with the quality of the plant specimen.
“If you find a specimen, with one variegated leaf and two regular ones, chances of good variegation are low.”
Another online plant seller bleaf.bn, said variegated plants have the ability to appeal to the masses, as their colours easily stand out from the conventional sea of green.
“Variegated plants actually started the whole plant craze boom pre-pandemic. Their value at the beginning was very high due to low supply and huge demand, but nowadays the prices have become very affordable.”
Sharing some tips and tricks on how to properly maintain variegated plants, especially in terms of variegated aroids, bleaf.bn said that location, media or the soil and watering frequency are important factors to consider.
“For location, good light but no direct afternoon light, ventilation is a must and for our tropical climate, the outdoors is preferred. Watering depends on location, media, pot size and ventilation, as poorly ventilated plants would require less.
“If the plant was just potted, I would keep an eye on it for a week or two to see how fast the media dries up, then I will adjust my inspection schedule. Variegated aroids loves frequent watering so just make sure the environment and media is right for that.”
The online seller added that fertilising should be the lowest priority when caring for a variegated houseplant, as “it is better to achieve a balance” location, planting media and water.
Variegated houseplants showcase nature’s diversity and beauty. Their intricate patterns and vibrant colours add elegance to any space. With proper care, enthusiasts can maintain their lasting vibrancy.
