National tug-of-war tournament set to return

The National Tug-of-War Championship and All-Borneo Tug-of-War Championship in conjunction with the royal birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will make a highly-anticipated return at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien at the capital on July 6 and August 3.

The tournaments, set to draw the leading teams both in the country and neighbouring states, will be jointly organised by the Tug-of-War Secretariat in conjunction with His Majesty’s 78th birthday and the Brunei Darussalam Tug-of-War Association (BDTA).

The National Tug-of-War Championship will contest three categories – category ‘A’ with a combined weight of 560kilogrammes (kg) for eight pullers and two reserves; category ‘B’ with a combined weight of 680kg for eight pullers and two reserves; and category ‘C’ for teenagers aged 19 and under born in 2005 and above.

The combined weight for Category ‘C’ has also been capped at 500kg for eight pullers and two reserves.

The preliminary rounds will be held on July 6 followed by the semi-finals and final on July 7.

The final will be held for categories ‘A’ and ‘B’ only with the Category ‘C’ final set to be staged in the presence of His Majesty as well as other members of the royal family on August 4.

The championship trophy at the national level is a kurnia (gift) by His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah. – Fadhil Yunus
