National Savings Day activities kick off

Nearly 500 primary school students participated in first of five National Savings Day 2024 Financial Awareness Roadshow yesterday.

The first in a series of roadshows, organised by the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) and the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Employees Trust Fund (TAP), Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) and several financial institutions was held at Dato Mohd Yassin Primary School.

Students took part in interactive games and activities that promoted financial awareness and concepts such as savings, takaful, insurance, retirement planning and financial consumer protection.

This included a digital game to promote financial literacy and TAP highlighting the impact of savings.

Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, who is also the chairperson of the National Financial Literacy Council (NFLC), officially launched the roadshow yesterday.

Acting Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Paduka Haji Khairuddin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, who is the chairman of the BDCB Board of Directors and deputy chairman of the NFLC, was also present.

BDCD Managing Director Hajah Rokiah binti Haji Badar said they hope the roadshow would provide students with a solid understanding of practical financial management that can be applied in their daily lives.

She noted that collaboration among relevant stakeholders is critical in enhancing financial literacy within the country to ensure financial consumers are capable of navigating the increasingly complex financial landscape.

The next roadshow will be held at Sungai Tali Primary School on June 11, followed by Rataie Primary School on June 13, Tutong Sixth Form Centre on June 27 and Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre on July 3.

A financial fun fair at the Jerudong Park Playground has also been scheduled for August, which features a number of family-friendly programmes and activities designed to make financial education fun. – James Kon & Azlan Othman
