The Brunei Darussalam national under-16 team will take part in the upcoming ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Boys’ Championship which will be held in Surakarta, Indonesia from June 21 until July 4.
The national team’s participation in the annual tournament serves as an important platform for the country’s young players to show their potential and abilities to compete in the regional level before moving to the international stage.
Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FABD) President Haji Feisal bin Haji Eusoff Patail has urged the players to give their full attention in every match, demonstrate skills and provide fierce competition to opposing teams.
“This tournament provides the best opportunity for the players to show their potential and consequently to be determined to enhance the profile of Brunei Darussalam on the international stage,” said the president during a meeting with players and families at the FABD House.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline that each player must have in order to form a cohesive team and cooperate with each other.
The 19th edition of the tournament will be divided into three groups whereby Group ‘A’ consist Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines and Singapore.
Group ‘B’ comprises Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Brunei Darussalam while Thailand, Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Australia complete Group ‘C’.
Brunei will take on Vietnam in their group match opener at the Sriwedari Stadium on June 22.
Hosts Indonesia are the defending champions after defeating Vietnam 1-0 in the final during the previous edition in 2022. – Fadhil Yunus
