National football players face disciplinary action for misconduct in Russia

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FABD) have taken disciplinary action against several national football players involved in a recent incident during the ‘FIFA Days’ friendly matches in Russia from November 12 to 18, 2024, according to a joint press release issued by both organisations on Monday.

Following separate investigations by MCYS and FABD, the authorities have imposed temporary suspensions of up to two years on the individuals found to have breached regulations, the code of ethics, and team guidelines. As part of their disciplinary measures, the affected players are also required to perform community service and enroll in the Program Khidmat Bakti Negara (PKBN) or National Service, which focuses on reinforcing discipline and accountability.

Despite the suspensions from national team duties, the players will still be allowed to compete in national league matches and represent their clubs in international home games.

MCYS has reiterated that representing Brunei Darussalam at the international level is both an honor and a responsibility. The ministry emphasised that athletes and officials must not only strive for excellence on the field but also uphold integrity and discipline off the field.

“Any breach of ethics and disciplinary standards will result in strict action,” MCYS stated, urging all sports associations, athletes, and officials to adhere to national regulations and codes of conduct to protect Brunei’s reputation.

The latest actions align with MCYS’ ongoing efforts, as highlighted in its previous statements on October 8 and November 18, 2024, to cultivate disciplined and responsible athletes who can serve as role models within the sporting community.

FABD has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency and professionalism within Brunei’s football scene. The association reminded all players, coaches, and officials to uphold the FABD Code of Ethics, FIFA Code of Ethics, and Brunei’s national laws.

“Any form of misconduct, corruption, match-fixing, discrimination, or unethical behavior will not be tolerated,” FABD stated. The association also encouraged individuals to report any breaches through the proper channels, warning that violations could result in suspensions, fines, or legal consequences.

With these measures, MCYS and FABD aim to uphold discipline and ensure that Brunei’s athletes represent the nation with pride and professionalism both on and off the field. – James Kon
