National Day Chess Blitz champ announced

Awangku Hafidzon bin Pengiran Haji Omar emerged champion of the 40th National Day Chess Blitz Championship 2024 held in conjunction with Brunei’s 40th National Day at the National Chess Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.

The leading chess competitor finished top of the Open category ahead of runner-up Dacpano Candelario and Ilham Abdul Hamid in third place.

Ashmit Sreejith came fourth while Muhd Danish Zaqwan ended in fifth place.

Sixth place went to Khaizuran followed Awangku Wafie Ikhwan in seventh with Siti Nur Fatimah completing the top eight finishers.

Meanwhile, Adib Hadhari claimed the Under-18 category while Abdur Atiff took second place and Ahmad Zaydani finished third. In the Under-16 category, Suthanthiran Subash emerged winner followed by Jeffy in second place and Md Wafri Ethan third.

Aiden Syahmi emerged winner in the Under-14 category followed by runner-up Jude Tie King Hieng and Amri Raihan in third place.

Other winners included Yap Choow Tun in the Above-65 category; Haji Kipli in the Above-50 category; and Fazreena in the Best Lady category.

The award for Best School in the Under-18 category when to St Andrew’s School while Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) was named Best School in the Under-14 category.

Australian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Luke Arnold presented prizes to the winners.

The competition, held over 13 rounds, was organised by the Brunei Chess Federation (BCF). – Fadhil Yunus
