MYR700 million SEA Games plan

KUALA LUMPUR (ANN/THE STAR) – The anticipated MYR700 million budget for hosting the 2027 SEA Games will be shared between the Malaysian government and private sector partners, as revealed during the Dewan Rakyat session.

Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that the Sarawak state government has pledged MYR365 million towards the initiative, while the Penang state government has committed MYR15 million.

However, Sabah, which had initially allocated MYR100,528,975 for the Games, later withdrew its support, citing insufficient facilities as the reason for their decision.

“The Ministry will engage in further discussions with private sector entities and corporate bodies to secure sponsorships, both in cash and in kind,” Yeoh noted in a written statement on Tuesday, October 22.

Yeoh emphasised that the Ministry envisions a more prudent and scaled-down approach for the SEA Games and the Para ASEAN 2027 Games, which are set to take place in Malaysia. The aim is to maintain efficiency while ensuring a successful event.

Additionally, she highlighted that efforts are underway to establish an Organising Committee and the SEA Games 2027 secretariat. This will be achieved through collaborative discussions with key stakeholders, including the Olympic Council of Malaysia, the Paralympic Council of Malaysia, and relevant state governments and ministries.

Yeoh’s response came in reply to a query from Chow Kon Yeow (PH-Batu Kawan) regarding the preparations for the 2027 SEA Games.
