MYR4.5M worth of drugs seized in Klang Valley

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR) – Some MYR4.5million worth of drugs have been seized following raids in the Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Yahaya Othman said a 29-year-old local man was detained during the operation on Friday and Saturday.

“A police team raided a luxury vehicle parked at a hypermarket in Cheras on Friday.

“We detained the male suspect and seized 114 kilogrammes (kg) of syabu,” he told a press conference at Kuala Lumpur police headquarters yesterday. Further investigation led police to a condominium in Ampang on April 15, he said.

“The unit was used by the syndicate as storage for drugs. We seized 1.8 kg of ecstasy, 3.1 kg of syabu, 1.3 kg of erimin five pills and 3 kg of ketamine,” he added.

According to DCP Yahaya, initial investigations found that the syndicate had been operating for two months.

“We believe they got their supply of drugs from the northern states. The drugs seized were worth MYR4.5million and meant for the distribution in the Klang Valley,” he said, adding that the suspect had been remanded until Saturday.

“He did not have any criminal record and also tested negative for drugs,” he said. DCP Yahaya also said police are attempting to uncover remnants of the syndicate.

“We will investigate the extent of the syndicate’s operation. The drugs seized could have been supplied to 750,000 drug users,” he said.

The syndicate attempted to evade the authorities by choosing a luxury vehicle to distribute the drugs and a condominium unit for storage, DCP Yahaya said.

“However, we will not be fooled by such tactics.”

He urged those with information on drug-related offences and activities to contact the police without delay.

“We appreciate the cooperation shown by the public in channelling information to us.

“Together we can combat the drug menace effectively,” he added.
