Musa Aman appointed as new Sabah governor

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – Former Sabah Chief Minister Tun Musa Aman has been appointed as the 11th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah, effective January 1, 2025.

His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, presented Musa with the Instrument of Appointment in a ceremony held at Balairung Kecil, Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

Musa, 73, was appointed as Sabah’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri under Article 1 of the Sabah State Constitution for a four-year term from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028.

His appointment succeeds Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who will complete his term of service on December 31 after holding the position for four terms since January 1, 2011.

During the same ceremony, Musa was also conferred the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara award, which carries the title “Tun.”

The ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Also present were Senate President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tan Sri Johari Abdul, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick, Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

Musa, a native of Beaufort – located approximately 97 km south of Kota Kinabalu – was born on March 30, 1951. He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Management from Edith Cowan University, Australia.

He was sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Sabah on March 27, 2003, succeeding Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, and held the position for five terms until May 12, 2018, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister in Sabah’s history.

In addition to his tenure as Chief Minister, Musa, who served as the Sungai Sibuga State Assemblyman for six terms (1994-2020), also held various key positions, including Sabah Minister of Finance, Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, and Malaysia’s Honorary Consul in Bangladesh.
