BANGKOK (ANN/THE NATION) – A Malaysian tourist and nine Thai policemen and defense volunteers were injured on Monday morning when insurgents detonated a homemade bomb hidden in a motorcycle near a police station in Pattani’s Muang district.
The explosion occurred at 8:20 am on Soi TK Park, off Pattani Pirom Road, adjacent to the Muang Pattani police station.
Authorities reported that the bomb was concealed inside a motorcycle parked on the street by insurgents and was detonated using a timing device. Following the blast, a bomb disposal team was dispatched to the scene. Police cordoned off the area and jammed mobile phone signals, fearing a potential secondary bomb aimed at ambushing officers.
A source from a security agency highlighted the need for heightened caution during post-blast inspections, noting that insurgents in Thailand’s deep South have become increasingly sophisticated in their bomb-making techniques.
“Previously, insurgents relied on walkie-talkie signals, timing devices, or mobile phones to detonate bombs. Now, modern devices incorporate all three systems,” the source explained.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, and the incident remains under investigation as authorities work to ensure safety and prevent further attacks.
