The Brunei Darussalam Supreme Court and the Judicial Branch of Peru formalised their commitment to judicial collaboration with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday.
The agreement aims to enhance communication, cooperation, and coordination on dispute avoidance and resolution between the two nations.
The MoU was signed by Brunei Darussalam Supreme Court Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong and President of the Judicial Branch of Peru Dr Javier Arévalo Vela.
Acting Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam Hajah Hazarena binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Hurairah was also present.
Before the signing, Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong and delegation met with Dr Javier Arévalo Vela for bilateral discussions.
The talks focused on key areas such as judicial education and training, advancements in courtroom technology, and the integration of mediation into judicial processes.
The MoU serves as a testament to the longstanding ties between Brunei and Peru, which established diplomatic relations on June 1, 1990.
It builds on both nations’ active participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), facilitating a shared platform to exchange judicial best practices and experiences.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen the skills and understanding of judges and judicial officers in handling disputes across differing legal systems.
The agreement marks the fifth such memorandum signed by the Brunei Darussalam Supreme Court with foreign jurisdictions.
Previous MoUs were signed with the Supreme People’s Court of China (2004), the Department of Justice of Hong Kong SAR (May 2023), the Supreme Court of Singapore (July 2023), and the Federal Court of Malaysia (March 2024).
