The Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) continued to strengthen and expand cooperation established since 2014 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the ministry’s Amar Pahlawan Hall yesterday.
Permanent Secretary at the MTIC Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof in his welcoming remarks, thanked UTB for their continuous cooperation.
“I would like to express my deep appreciation to UTB because we managed to produce a system called ‘Road Accident Data Enhancement and Development’ (RADED) to help collect and analyse accident data. The effort is in line with the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Strategic Plan 2025 towards achieving the goal through increased efforts to reduce accident rates in the country,” he said.
“There has been more cooperation between the ministry and UTB. The latest initiative was a survey in phases to understand the public transportation needs, launched on December 19, 2023. The survey aimed to improve the existing bus system by getting views and input from various stakeholders on long-term strategies for creating an efficient interconnection system that is easily accessible to facilitate the mobility of people and residents,” he added.
Through the signing of the MoU, he said, it “will encourage further collaboration in the field of shared interests such as intelligent transport systems, smart mobility, smart logistics, artificial intelligence (AI), cyber security, the digital economy, digital technologies, science and innovation”.
Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor of UTB Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman said, “the signing of the MoU will add value to the MTIC and UTB research ecosystems. UTB was also entrusted by the National Road Safety Council (MKKJR), whereby UTB, through the Centre for Transport Research ‘CfTR’ has worked on RADED as the best solution to improve the condition of the roads. I understand that UTB through CfTR will jointly implement a workshop for World Remembrance Day and a national survey to increase bus ridership together with the Land Transport Department (JPD).”
