Monarch welcomes ASEAN-Canada strategic partnership

In light of challenges faced at the regional level, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam expressed pleasure with the establishment of the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership to enhance collaboration in more critical areas of mutual interests.

The monarch stated this in a titah delivered during the ASEAN-Canada Summit yesterday at the Jakarta Convention Centre, Indonesia. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen.

The monarch then highlighted Canada’s support for the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change, hosted by the Sultanate, will help ASEAN develop strategies and climate policies to mitigate and address these challenges. His Majesty also expressed condolences and sympathies to those affected by the devastating forest fires spreading across Canada in recent months.

In ending the titah, His Majesty emphasised the need to enhance cooperation in the area of agricultural production and food security, and also welcomed in this regard, the adoption of the ASEAN-Canada Joint Leaders’ Statement on Strengthening Cooperation on Food Security and Nutrition in Times of Crisis.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau in a statement shared that the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy are aligned and share clear commitments to peace and stability. In addition, Canada also expressed that it would like to join ASEAN-led mechanisms such as the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting.
