Mobile app wins judges’ hearts

Ma’had Islam Brunei students, with their mobile application Mr Grabbish, won the hearts of judges in the primary school category during the Brunei Info-Communications Technology Awards (BICTA) 2023 prize presentation ceremony yesterday.

Team member Aaron was anxious prior to the announcement as they worked hard on their product.

On the product, Aaron said it is a transportation network application that offers a fast rubbish collection service.

The Green Hero on the application allows users to categorise rubbish types: glass, plastic, metals, papers or mix.

“Users then take photos of their collected rubbish, key in their address or current location and the Green Hero will come and pick it up,” he explained.

On how the idea came about, Aaron shared that it came from brainstorming with team members and teachers.

“We will keep updating the app. For now, it is only available for Android users,” he said. Meanwhile, Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College won the secondary school category for their product Berasap. The team shared that it is a gaming application that highlights the dangers of smoking and raises awareness among students, especially those below 13 years old.

They shared that the idea behind the game came about after acknowledging that some 500 million people across the world have died due to secondary smoking, especially at home.

“We want to spread awareness, especially among students, to let them know that smoking is not an acceptable habit to have,” they said.

“We worked on this product for about four months, including during our school break to meet the deadline.” – Rokiah Mahmud
