Ministers learn first-hand about airport upgrades

Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar and Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof paid a site visit to survey the latest progress in the upgrading and improvement works at the Brunei International Airport (BIA).

Among the main projects under the National Development Plan (RKN) are the rehabilitation works on the runway pavement that sees the upgrading of motion areas in allowing BIA to accept wide-body aircraft used by cargo airlines around the world; detention pond that sees the building of water retention pools and proper drainage systems to improve the flow of rainwater and prevent flooding at the airport and runway; and a reputably safe advanced lightning protection system that guarantees the interests of the aviation industry and stakeholders.

The visit also featured a briefing on air-conditioning repair works at the airport expected to be completed in stages from the end of February to March 2023.

In efforts to address the comfort of passengers and the public at the airport, the reparation works undertaken by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in collaboration with the Public Works Department (JKR), is currently in Phase 2, which includes the replacement of five chillers expected for completion by September.

Along with RKN projects that were explained, the survey conducted yesterday showed the DCA’s commitment in ensuring the safety, well-being and comfort of the public are preserved and guaranteed.

Four officers who passed the ICAO 053 Non-Radar Approach Control course from the Singapore Aviation Academy also received certificates during the visit. This initiative is one of the measures to ensure succession planning for air traffic controller specialists at
the BIA.

Deputy Minister of Development Dato Seri Paduka Ar Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin; permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Development and Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications; and senior officers from both ministries were also present.
