The Sultanate’s commitment towards delivering shared promise of putting the world on a better and a more sustainable path was underscored by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah in Brunei Darussalam’s statement at the General Debate of the Ministerial Segment of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development 2023 in New York, United States.
Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew added that social economic development must take place without compromising the planet’s natural resources.
“For Brunei Darussalam, this requires us to adopt the whole-of-nation approach in collaborative strategies for a more prosperous, progressive and sustainable future,“ he said.
To renew global ambition for a sustainable future, the minister emphasised several key points. “Global communities must strive to develop solutions by building solid and resilient Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) partnerships, ensuring that no one is left behind.
“The global ecosystem for a conducive implementation of the SDGs must be strengthened, particularly to enhance monitoring and evaluation for better understanding of the current landscape and mobilisation of actions.”
Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew also said Brunei Darussalam supports the call from the United Nations Secretary-General to expand opportunities and capacities to access resources needed to accelerate SDGs progress.
“Such access must be facilitated to bridge development gaps, fortify sustainability, and ensure equitable nation-building for all,” the minister said.
Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew is leading the Bruneian delegation at the three-day Ministerial Segment of the Forum and the High-Level segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) from July 17 to 20.
The minister was also invited as a panellist to share experiences of collecting data and deepening the data analysis in voluntary national reviews (VNRs). – James Kon
