Minister highlights importance of history in appreciating Brunei’s independence

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin stressed on the importance of history in nurturing love for the country.

He said this while speaking at the Webinar Forum with Youth, organised by the Brunei History Centre (PSB), in conjunction with the 38th National Day celebration.

The minister applauded the efforts by PSB, Brunei History Association (PESEBAR) and Brunei Youth Council (BYC) for bringing to light an interesting topic at the webinar yesterday.

Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan also extended special thanks to PESEBAR in their efforts to instil an appreciation for history among the youth and noted that the forum was beneficial to both youth and the public by encouraging people to learn about history on a daily basis.

Themed Menghargai Kemerdekaan Negara, the forum was held on a virtual platform to discuss the importance of history from the youth’s point of view regarding the country’s independence.

It also touched on youth planning and development strategies as the younger generation will shoulder the roles and responsibilities in maintaining independence inthe future.

Legislative Council (LegCo) member and BYC President Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari, permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries and directors at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) were also present.

The forum began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa by Alomsa Nor Adzmin bin Haji Ali Omar followed by welcoming remarks from PESEBAR President Dr Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong. It proceeded with a keynote speech from Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan’s (KUPU SB) Jawi and Kitab Turath Research and Studies Centre Deputy Director Dr Haji Mohammad Shahrol Azmi bin Haji Abdul Muluk.

The forum saw an online quiz conducted by PSB and an energiser activity by BYC. Panel members at the forum yesterday were lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Development Management, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Dr Mohammad Hilmy Baihaqy bin Haji Yussof and founder of @facts.bn Mohamad Fauzi bin Idris, while the moderator was history officer at PSB Farahaina binti Anchong.

The event also saw a presentation by the youth showing their aspirations and views on independence and how they can contribute to nation building.

Some 155 participants, comprising officers from departments under the MCYS and Ministry of Education, lecturers and students from higher learning institutions, members of BYC, PESEBAR and the public, attended the forum.
