Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha called for enhanced cooperation among regional technology institutions during opening remarks at the 12th Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (IAMMSTI-12) yesterday.
“We must continue to not only strengthen collaboration among all ASEAN member states, but also further enhance cooperation between the key stakeholders in our innovation systems that include government, academia, industry, and society,” said the minister.
The minister said that the meeting yesterday was to reflect on regional progress in developing of science, technology, and innovation and agree on a way forward to further realise goals for the ASEAN Plan of Action and Science, Technology, and Innovation (APASTI) 2016-2025.
“It is imperative that we continue to support projects and activities that address real world problems that we collectively face in ASEAN.
“In doing so, we can ensure that the practical solutions are developed from the projects that are undertaken and that our activities will have a profound impact on the socio-economic development of the region.
“For example, ASEAN is working on the development of its strategy for carbon neutrality. I am certain that our projects and activities under IAMMSTI can help to support the implementation of the strategy.”
Yesterday, the minister chaired IAMMSTI-12 which took place at The Empire Brunei.
The meeting approved a joint statement that included recommendations from the 83rd Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology.
Meanwhile, five key deliverables were passed by the meeting under as priorities for 2024: The establishment of the ASEAN Technology Management Hub (Phase III); developing the ASEAN regional research infrastructure strategy (Phase II); establishing the ASEAN startup initiative; establishing the ASEAN Talent Mobility Community; and implementing the ASEAN Energy Resilience Assessment Guideline: Capacity Building on Energy Resilience Assessment.
