The status of waqaf land for building mosques was raised at the 20th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting yesterday.
Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman said the management of waqaf land depends on the intentions of the endower. He said if its intention is for the construction of a mosque or surau, efforts will be made to fulfil it.
However, if the land is not suitable due to the location or size, it will be subject to certain laws, he added. The minister added that it would be clearer once the Waqaf Act, now in its final stages of resolution, is in place.
The enquiry regarding waqaf land was raised by LegCo member Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann. – Adib Noor
