Mind your jokes and jests, Imams say

Azlan Othman

Muslims should not be too excessive in joking and jesting to the extent that politeness and good manners are lost, Imams said in the Friday sermon yesterday.

Imams added that joking and jesting are permissible in Islam. Imams said jokes are for the purpose of being friendly or to please others and said one should not spread lies while joking.

Excessive joking and jesting may cause our heart to harden and lead one to neglect the remembrance of Allah the Almighty.

When the heart is hardened, it is difficult for it to accept the light of truth, they said.

Jokes should not frighten others, or contain insults, slander, make fun of or hurt others.

Imams also cautioned the Ummah not to joke about things that will become valid and recognised according to Syariah such as marriage and divorce.
