The disposal of medical waste in the Sultanate is in line with international standards, said Minister of Health Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar during the 19th Legislative Council (LegCo) session yesterday.
He said this in response to an enquiry by LegCo member Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohd Yusof on whether medical waste is properly disposed of in the country as mistreatment of such waste is harmful to people, animals and the environment.
“Medical waste is properly disposed of by a certified outsourced company in Selayun,” the minister said.
The proper disposal of medical waste in the Sultanate follows stringent standard operating procedures which include the transportation of the waste in a refrigerated state by specialised trucks.
It was also shared that the incinerator at the centre is controlled and monitored remotely from Australia. Each type of medical waste is incinerated in accordance with its set temperature with toxic waste set at the highest.
The process involves heat, but is also entirely smokeless, said the minister.
Even after the incineration process the ashes are tested and cleared before final disposal.
The minister said the proper disposal of medical waste in the Sultanate is handled as part of best practices by the Ministry of Health.
