Medical students encouraged to broaden horizons

Medical, dental and allied health students are encouraged to pursue other interests alongside their medical studies during a dialogue session with the Ministry of Health’s leadership at the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre yesterday.

During the dialogue, Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar said that as they expand healthcare services, other fields such as artifical intelligence and information technology are needed.

“We have a climate unit in the Ministry of Health who are passionate in green energy. If you have other interests, you can pursue it,” said the minister.

He also encouraged the students to join non-governmental organisations (NGOs), even if they are not directly health related.

He noted NGOs can tackle issues like poverty, which contributes to health issues. “So if you are on the ground, you can also educate the underprivileged on healthcare and inculcate youth with knowledge that they have the power to improve themselves,” said the minister.

Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the Ministry of Health Dr Hajah Rafidah binti Haji Gharif added, “There are lots of opportunities for students to help the community and advocate for health literacy.”

She said there are opportunities to join researchers at the Health Promotion Centre or hospitals as well as be involved in volunteer work or attachments at the ministry where they would visit rural communities.

Meanwhile, the minister also shared tips on stress relief. “You must find ways to release your stress,” said the minister, encouraging students to take up a hobby. “Try to find one in music, in sports or games.”

He said he personally enjoys playing FIFA on the Playstation.

He added, “If you see your friends or colleagues are struggling, please help them, life is a journey. Even if you fail, it is still a good experience. Don’t let failure put you down.”

The minister said the study of medicine is a life long journey.

”You must think of the long term sacrifices needed to be made for you and your family. If you are passionate, you can go for it all the way. When you reach your goal, you will feel that the sacrifices were worth it.” – James Kon
