ANN/THE STAR – Director Syamsul Yusof is elated that his film Mat Kilau Kebangkitan Pahlawan has earned RM12.2 at the Malaysian box office in just four days.

He shared the good news with his 1.7 million followers on Instagram on Monday, stating Mat Kilau Kebangkitan Pahlawan as the “most successful Malay epic film ever”.

He added in the caption: “Mat Kilau beat Jurassic World Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick at the (Malaysian) box office. Extraordinary.”

GSC Movies confirmed the film made MYR12 million after four days of screening on its official Facebook page. Mat Kilau opened at cinemas nationwide on June 23.

Starring Datuk Adi Putra, Beto Kusyairy, Fattah Amin, Yayan Ruhan and Johan As’ari, the movie tells one portion of the life of Malay warrior Mat Kilau, who fought against the British in the late 19th Century.

Made with a budget of MYR8 million, it’s said that 60 per cent of the film’s story is based on true events.

Mat Kilau Kebangkitan Pahlawan focusses on the year 1892 and is set in Pahang, when Mat Kilau and his father, Tok Gajah, are said to have attacked the British military base with 80 other fighters.

Bernama said the film has “set a new benchmark for the national film industry”.

Mat Kilau Kebangkitan Pahlawan however did not surpass Syamsul’s previous box office collection for the same period.

In 2018, Munafik 2 – made with a budget of MYR2.9 million – earned MYR21.6 million in four days. The horror flick became the number one film of that year and all-time having earned a total of MYR37.7 million.
