Martial artist breaks world record with custom-forged sword

UPI – A Swiss martial artist and expert swordsman broke a Guinness World Record by using his custom-made blade to slice through rice straw mats 100 times in one minute.

Alex Gueffroy, 35, used a sword that was custom-made by bladesmith Reto Zürcher to attempt the record for the most martial arts sword cuts in one minute (rice straw).

“A record like this is a challenge for both the swordsman and also for the blade he wields,” Gueffroy told Guinness World Records.

Gueffroy wielded the sword, which he dubbed Dumenic, and sliced through rice straw mats as they were replaced by a team of three men during the attempt.

“The density of such a mat is approximate to that of flesh,” he said.

“My personal goal was 100 cuts. I set myself a pace then tried to maintain that speed during the whole minute. I also had to get a lot of stamina to get through this minute.”

Gueffroy met his personal goal of 100 cuts, which was enough to take the record.
