The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a local man to settle a BND51,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Azhrin Hidayat bin Saidi would have to serve 15 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
Magistrate Syarifah Nur Baqiyah binti Malai Shahran heard from the customs prosecutor that the defendant was arrested on May 23, 2022, during an operation conducted by the Enforcement Division of the Royal Customs and Excise Department at a house in Perpindahan Kampong Mentiri.
The personnel uncovered 49 cartons and 20 packets of various brand cigarettes.
All seized items were ordered forfeited to the state and destroyed. – Fadley Faisal
