A 37-year-old local man was fined BND21,000 for possessing smuggled cigarettes, following his guilty plea at the Tutong Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Mohammad Sahrul bin Duah would have to serve 13 months in prison in default of payment of the fines. The incident took place on July 20, 2023 when customs enforcement officers seized 11 cartons and 101 packets of assorted cigarettes at Mohammad Sahrul’s residence in RPN Kampong Bukit Beruang.
In addition to the fine, the court ordered the confiscation of the seized cigarettes, which will be destroyed and BND321 forfeited to the state. – Fadley Faisal
