A 38-year-old Bruneian man was sentenced on Wednesday to three years’ imprisonment with three canings after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his 15-year-old niece.
High Court Judicial Commissioner Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Datu Juragan Laila Diraja Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Kefli heard from the prosecution that the incident took place in February 2022 at the family home.
The incident occurred when the defendant and the victim were alone in the kitchen. During a conversation, the defendant repeatedly asked the victim if she wanted to engage in sexual intercourse with him.
Despite her initial refusal and silence, the defendant’s persistence led the victim to eventually comply. The defendant and the victim then engaged in sexual intercourse. The act was interrupted due to the defendant’s fear of being discovered.
The matter came to light on February 19, 2023, when the victim, weary of the defendant’s continuous sexual advances, confided in her mother. Her mother took the victim to the police station to report the incident.
The defendant was detained on February 27 for investigation. He admitted to having sexual intercourse with the victim in February 2022, despite knowing her young age. – Fadley Faisal
