Man jailed for firearm possession

Fadley Faisal

A 34-year-old local was sentenced yesterday to six years and six months’ jail with three whippings after he was found guilty of a charge for possessing two self-made rifles at home without licence. Deputy Public Prosecutor Raihan Nabilah binti Ahmad Ghazali produced 10 witnesses in proving the case against Norfazilah bin Abdul Rahman beyond reasonable doubt.

Senior Magistrate Azrimah binti Abdul Rahman did not find any “plausible explanation” for possessing the rifles in Norfazilah’s defence throughout the trial.

Evidence and testimonies that led to the court’s decision revealed that the defendant was arrested at his residence in Jalan Kecil Birau, Tutong.

It was a raid pursued by Narcotics Control Bureau officers on the morning of January 11, 2021. Instead of finding drugs, officers retrieved one self-made rifle from a car parked at the home compound as well as parts that made up another self-made rifle in a freezer at the back of the house.

The case was transferred to the Lamunin Police station, whose investigations in turn led to the prosecution framing the charge against Norfazilah.
