The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed an 18-month jail sentence to a local man after he pleaded guilty to theft.
Mohd Zulkarnaien bin Yusup stole a motorcycle and an air compressor from two addresses, Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif heard.
Prosecutor Abdul Hanan bin Haji Erwan further revealed that the defendant was walking around STKRJ Kampong Katok ‘A’ in early September around noon when he came across a motorcycle parked at a house nearby.
He then approached it and brought it out to a nearby electrical substation, where he started its engine.
The defendant rode the motorcycle up to the Katok highway before it ran out of fuel.
The defendant then sought a friend’s help in refilling the tank before bringing it home.
He later brought the motorcycle to a friend, to whom he sold for BND300.
On September 12, the defendant went to a house in Kampong Tungku, where he saw an air compressor in the garage.
Before he could make away with it, the defendant noticed a CCTV camera.
He quickly covered his face with his palms and carried the air compressor out to a nearby electrical substation.
He then went home for a change of clothes and burned the ones he was wearing earlier.
Later, he got a friend to assist him in picking up the compressor and deliver it to another friend who bought it for BND60.
When the houseowner realised that his air compressor had gone missing, he checked the CCTV, saw the theft in action and filed a police report.
The footage provided by the homeowner aided the police investigations, which led to the defendant’s arrest. – Fadley Faisal
