Man in ‘Sai-Gone’ raid charged with drug trafficking

Prosecutors yesterday levelled charges in court against an individual caught during a major drug bust.

Thirty-eight-year-old Mohammad Sharifudin bin Haji Abdullah, caught during Operation ‘Sai Gone’ is alleged to have possessed 251.58 grammes of methylamphetamine crystals for trafficking at a terrace house in Kuala Belait.

He is also purported to have in possession 11.96 grammes of methylamphetamine crystals in a car parked at the same house.

Penalties for the charges of carrying over 100 grammes of pure methylamphetamine is death, while the lesser amount provides a minimum of five years’ jail with five canings and a maximum of 20 years’ jail with 15 canings.

Prosecutor Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid informed the court that the case is still in its early stages where the drug exhibits are yet to be analysed by the Department of Scientific Services.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif did not record pleas and adjourned the case to March 18.

Before the court rose, the defendant applied to be released on bail but was met with the prosecution’s objection, leading to the court’s decision to deny it.
