The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) has issued a compound fine of BND100 to an individual for disposing of cigarette butts near the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex in the capital.
The offender, identified as Wan Mohammad Hardiny bin Wan Haji Mohd Yali, was fined under the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021. The individual has seven days to settle the fine, failing which court action will be initiated.
If convicted in court, penalties range from BND1,000 to BND3,000 for a first offence, and up to BND9,000 or six months imprisonment for repeat offences.
JASTRe urges the public and business owners to uphold cleanliness and maintain the environment, emphasising the importance of keeping public spaces free of litter. – Daniel Lim
