Man fined for littering in Belait

A man was issued a BND400 compound fine by the Enforcement Division at the Belait District Office (JDB) for disposing of trash in the form of used cardboard boxes and plastics on September 26.

The fine was issued under Chapter 12(1)(a) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021, and the offender had settled the fine. If left unsettled, the case would be brought to court.

Should the case go to court and the individual is found guilty, they could face a fine ranging from BND1,000 to BND3,000 for a first-time offence. For repeat offences, the penalties increase to a fine between BND3,000 and BND9,000 and may include imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

The division reminds members of the public that they will continue to monitor and patrol areas across the Belait District to ensure that the public disposes of waste properly to maintain the nation’s cleanliness, and reminds the public of the responsibility to ensure the cleanliness of the surrounding environment.

The division also noted that those who wish to lodge complaints or issues related to littering can call their hotline at 3334335 extension 1404 or 1153. – DANIEL LIM
