The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a Malaysian man to settle a BND150,200 fine for possessing smuggled cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.
Chang Foh Hin, 36, would have to serve 33 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
The court heard that the defendant was arrested by Customs preventive officers upon discovering that he had kept 154 cartons of cigarettes, 439 bottles of liquor and BND3,200 cash, proceeds from illicit sales of the contraband.
The Customs prosecutor yesterday informed the court that an inspection was carried out at the defendant’s residence in Kampong Kilanas on December 26, 2021 at 2am.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni, presiding in the Bandar court house, also ordered the cigarettes to be destroyed and the cash forfeited.
