Indonesian man, Muhammad Tinwar, was ordered on Monday to settle a BND14,000 fine or serve 13 months in jail in default of payment of the fine after he pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing smuggled cigarettes.
The Customs prosecutor informed Magistrate Qamarul Affyian bin Abdul Rahman that the defendant was apprehended on August 10, during a joint operation involving the Religious Enforcement Agency, the Immigration and National Registration Department, and the Royal Customs and Excise Department. The operation took place at a workers’ residence in Kampong Telanai at about 9.30pm.
During the operation, authorities seized 15 cartons and 4 packets of various types of cigarettes, along with a mobile phone. – FADLEY FAISAL
