ANN/THE STRAITS TIMES – A 26-year-old man was arrested after officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) seized a significant quantity of drugs – including approximately 6.9 kilogrammes (kg) of cannabis – from a private residence near Cavenagh Road in Singapore.
In a media statement yesterday, CNB estimated the drugs’ street value at over SGD184,000, noting that the quantity could sustain the addiction of about 1,040 abusers for a week.
Officers were forced to break into the unit after the suspect refused entry. He was later found and arrested in one of the bedrooms. A search of the room uncovered about 6.89kg of cannabis, 69 grammes (g) of Ice (methamphetamine), 21g of ketamine, and 20g of ecstasy. Additionally, six LSD stamps and six bottles of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a party drug, were confiscated.
The suspect was also found carrying small amounts of cannabis and ketamine, along with SGD6,229.50 in cash and various foreign currencies. Investigations are ongoing.
In his car parked in the residential compound, another 25g of cannabis, 25g of psilocybin mushrooms, 17g of Ice and a small amount of ketamine were found.
Investigations into the arrested man are ongoing.
If found guilty of trafficking more than 500g of cannabis, he may face the death penalty.
This incident shows that cannabis is still in demand, said Senior Assistant Commissioner Sng Chern Hong, who is CNB’s deputy director of policy and administration. “CNB would like to remind the public that cannabis is not a ‘harmless vegetable substance’ as is often misleadingly portrayed, especially by those lobbying for cannabis legalisation,” he said.
He cited a review by the Institute of Mental Health, which showed that the drug causes brain damage and has been associated with serious mental health problems. Sng said, “Make no mistake about it, cannabis is harmful.”
